Victoria Cup 2004 - Donovaly

Standa Hlavinka

Saturday 3/7 2004
Although the weather forecast wasn't very promising, the unbelievable has happened - there is no rain in Donovaly! Not only it doesn't rain, but there is also beautiful summer weather, it is only 15°C, but that is in the altitude of 900metres nothing extraordinary. On the contrary to the last year's race there is straight on a first briefing in a camp Kamzik commanded the leaving for the landing near the water station under the launch Baranovo, yet after the consideration of the wind's direction is the whole competitive field speedily moved onto the launch Stara kopa above the Banska Bystrica.

There is announced a 39km long task on a briefing at 14:00 with one turning point Nemecka and with a goal in Rohozna. As the sky looks just great, the launching window is opened at 14:10 and twenty minutes later is Michal Orolin starting, shortly followed by Juraj Čiernik, Peter Vrabec and some other optimists. Yet all of them are without the hint of thermal shortly down again and because the wind is rather west than north, there are troubles with other launches.

"We are all equal in the bushes", someone is commenting the fall of the fourth pilot into the jungle under the launch and approximately at 15:30 there is coming the group of today's racers to try a second round. Although is the direction of the wind getting worse and not better, they are bravely willing to fly.

"Fuck it", says one of the pilots to Michal Orolin after his fifth unsuccessful attempt to throw on a canopy and Juraj Ciernik and Peter Kucera are getting into the air. Another hopeless attempt of three pilots trying to depart onto the raceway from the height of launch right before the closing of the launching window is not successful and all three pilots are landing by the first village with the view of the launch. The window is closed at 16:20 and the rest of the competitive field of 25 racers is packing their canopies into the bags and leaves the field with a sigh of relief. In spite of todays apparently good condition is present day ending without any points and because tomorrow there should be the wind getting more to the south, we can presume the departure by the cable railway right to the Donovaly on the launch of Nova hola, and hopefully there are not bushes underneath.
