Saturday, August 17
Today is the first day during the competition when the sky has been clear since morning, and the sun begins to shine hot before 9 a.m. In the event that a valid discipline is flown, it will also be the last day of the race. Even though the wind in the upper altitudes is strong, the starting ground of Kralova Hora is considered and simultaneously the goulash preparations for the evening's party get underway.

"An old guy like me, they should've shot when he was young", says Peter Halmos , alias Pamir, with three bottles of beer bought at a little shop, during a planned stop on the way to the Čieraž starting ground, which was decided on in light of the strong winds at higher altitudes.

Today's briefing at the starting ground takes place by 12:00 and a discipline very similar to yesterday's is announced. The only difference is in the swapping of the first turning point of Polomka for Slovenska Lupca, by which the length of the route is shortened to 49km and the first leg is flown with the wind. The bases of the beautiful piles of cloud for at considerably higher altitudes today, and the crest of the Low Tatras can finally be seen in its entirety.

The start window is open at 12:30 with the firing of Jano Jagos's pistol on the ramp no. 1 (no. 2 has to wait) and its duration set at three hours. An East wind blows the forming wisps of cloud over the mountain, this time more from the back and the kick-off shot leaves everyone cold for a long while.

"I'd rather not take off," sighs leading racer, Juraj Sladky, and begins "tuning" his wing with a carefully sharpened stick. As is demonstrated later in flight, his wing drifts slightly to the left, and the wooden stick will apparently solve everything reliably.

The wind meanwhile turns windsleeves and flags from all sides, just not the right one, the northwest side, and those who don't head into the woods to gather mushrooms lie down in the shade of their wings and sleep.

Panic is caused by a Moravian hotshot, Honza Matějovský, who, with a determined look on his face gets up on the starting ramp at 13:30, and with his wing at that. Debates are led as to whether he intends to take off under these conditions or if this is a publicity stunt for the maker of his glider, Karl Haman, who has been here since yesterday as a non-participating observer.

Honza Matejovsky is ready to take off

After half an hour of very bad conditions, the flight director closes the start window and Honza Matějovský is forced to back off the ramp, back to the starting isle. After a brief discussion of the pilot's commission, it is decided to cancel today's discipline if the conditions at the launch do not improve by 15:00. To everyone's surprise, Hungarian racer, Zoltan Pandi gets up on the ramp and in a singular breeze disappears without a noticeable gain of altitude, towards the first turning point somewhere down in the valley.

In light of the very bad conditions for take off, today's discipline is definitely cancelled at 15:00. Wings are packed up and the whole racing field leaves for Lopeje for goulash and the evening party. "Dance Director" Michal Oravec makes a speech getting everyone on their feet to the rhythm of the disco music, and the grass in front of the lodging house gradually begins to look like the trampled grass in front of a football goal.
