Tuesday, May 6
A broken leg just above the ankle, (apparently resulting from a motorcycle accident), is the reason for Juraj Kleja's absence from yesterday's results. The zero points achieved by Michal Orolin are, for a change, due to his organizing, family and other commitments. You just can't do everything at once.

Juraj Kleja and his broken leg

A fresh southeasterly wind blew all night on the starting ground, and in contrast to yesterday's 10 m/s, Lysá hora in the Beskyd mountains today has 16m/s. The sun has been burning bright since early morning and even the temperature on Straník is noticeably higher than it was yesterday.

At the noon briefing on the starting ground, a 43 km-long discipline is announced with a starting point at Ladonhora, with one turning point in Turzovka and the same goal as yesterday past Čadca. The start window is open from 13:10 to 15:30 and its closing, reopening and subsequent extension due to strong winds is expected.

 Tomas Brauner and Martin Orlik

Even though a few minutes before the opening of the start window, Karel Charlie Vejchodsky and Honza Skrabalek take off outside of the race and quickly turn up to 1700 m to fly towards the Polish border, no one else on the starting ground feels like going up into the strong wind.

Mirek Radar Stehula and Miroslav Varvarovsky

Only after a good half hour of waiting do individual racers meander up to the start, just to take off and that mostly using the elevator, or straight up, system.

 In the air

The easier attainment of today's starting point is balanced by the more problematic progress sideways to the wind toward Turzovka. While the starting point is gradually reached by 54 pilots, the turning point at Turzovka unreachable for anyone. Petr Kostrhun with Mirek Radar Stěhula make it to the 20th km and so become the victors in today's placement. Štefan Štefák lands just under two kilometers behind them. After today's scoring, Tomáš Brauner takes the lead in the overall placing of the race, landing together with a large group by Kysucké Nové Mesto on the 16th km of the route.

And while the blowing of an unnamed Czech pilot into the river Kysuca can be considered a funny story thanks to its one-meter depth, the landing of one of the Polish pilots just past the first turning point unfortunately ended with a broken vertebrae and transportation to the hospital. And poor Varvaro with a broken right hand in the wrist is leaving for home tomorrow. A truly windy day ...
